“The Ritual” and “The Night House” director David Bruckner takes the helm of this “Hellraiser” reboot, which isn’t quite a remake of the original film but doesn’t completely upend the rules of the franchise either. It’s a new twist on the franchise with an emotional hook (the protagonist is an addict) and a new Pinhead (played by Jamie Clayton), but it delivers on the gore and practical effects that those coming to a “Hellraiser” movie would expect.

The official synopsis calls this a “reimagining” of Clive Barker’s original story that follows a young woman struggling with addiction who comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another universe. She works together with her friends to uncover the mysteries of the box (and the man who previously owned it) before it’s too late.
