Layoffs Hit CNN Atlanta Amid Ratings Surge From Non-Stop Malaysia Flight Coverage

Viewers have been flocking to the cable network for wall-to-wall coverage of the missing plane

CNN laid off 16 employees Thursday from its Image and Sound unit in Atlanta, an individual with knowledge of the situation confirmed to TheWrap.

Among those given pink slips were photographers and video editors in the division, which employs about 450 people, according to TVNewser. An insider told the outlet the layoffs were a result of new technologies.

A spokesperson for CNN has not yet returned TheWrap’s request for comment.

This latest round of CNN layoffs comes at a time when viewers have been flocking to the cable network for non-stop coverage of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

As TheWrap reported, on Tuesday, “Anderson Cooper 360” beat out Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor” in the key 25-54 news demographic in the 8 p.m. hour. During the hour “Anderson Cooper 360” scored 452,000 viewers in the demo, edging out the 448,000 demo viewers that  “The O’Reilly Factor” had.

Over the weekend, CNN also swept Fox News in the cable news key demo, adults 25-54, on Saturday and Sunday in both total day and primetime.
