‘Palm Springs,’ ‘Lovecraft Country’ Lead Critics Choice Super Awards Nominations

Maybe this wasn’t the best year to launch an awards show devoted to the kind of superhero, sci-fi and action movies that mostly got moved off the release schedule?

The Andy Samberg comedy “Palm Springs” led all films in nominations for the first annual Critics Choice Super Awards, a new honor from the Critics Choice Association devoted to superhero, sci-fi/fantasy, horror, action and animated films and television series. “Lovecraft Country” was the most nominated program in the television categories.

The winners will be announced during a special on The CW on Jan. 10, 2021, with Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez hosting.

The Critics Choice Association, which has been presenting the Critics Choice Awards for 25 years and the Critics Choice Documentary Awards for five years, added the Critics Choice Super Awards during a year in which many of the big genre films that would have been competing for prizes — among them the James Bond film “No Time to Die” and Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” — were rescheduled for 2021 releases because of coronavirus-prompted theater closings.

In addition, the early timeline for the nominations meant that some late-2020 films that might well have been major contenders, including George Clooney’s sci-fi epic “The Midnight Sky” and Patty Jenkins’ Christmas Day release “Wonder Woman 1984,” could not be considered.

The result is a roster of nominees that is conspicuously missing big superhero or action flicks, filled instead with early-year theatrical releases (“Bad Boys for Life”), streaming premieres (“Da 5 Bloods,” “Extraction,” “Greyhound,” “The Outpost” and “Mulan”) and the one big-budget, major-studio release that dared open during the pandemic, Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.”

The comedy “Palm Springs” qualified as a sci-fi film by virtue of its time-travel plot, and landed five nominations to lead the pack. “Birds of Prey,” “Freaky,” “Onward,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “The Hunt,” “The Old Guard” and “The Willoughbys” each received four nominations.

In the television categories, “Lovecraft Country” led with six nominations, followed by “The Boys” with five and “Archer,” “Big Mouth” and “Evil” with four.

Netflix led all studios and networks with 35 nominations. HBO and HBO Max received 18, Amazon and Amazon Studios 16, Disney+ 15, CBS and CBS All Access 13 and the CW and Universal 10 each.
