The eight-episode period drama is based on Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel of the same name. The book follows Undine Spragg, a Midwestern girl who attempts to climb the social ladder in New York City society and beyond.

The show will be penned by British playwright and screenwriter Christopher Hampton, who had previously written the screenplay as a feature-length script, which was published in a 2002 collection.

The short series is expected to be sold to a cable network.
