Fans will be treated to a new trailer for “The Batman” this weekend during the virtual fan event DC Fandome. But ahead of that debut, director Matt Reeves offered up a new image from the film to tide folks over.

The image (which Reeves says is a shot from the trailer) paints Robert Pattinson’s titular character in silhouette while he looks on at Gotham City – paying off Reeves’ promise for this “Batman” of a Gotham like we’ve never seen it before.

Indeed, production for “The Batman” largely took place in London, although some second-unit photography took to the streets of Chicago – which is what Christopher Nolan used as the basis for his Gotham City in “The Dark Knight.” This image is but a small tease of a larger film, but it’ll be interesting to see what Reeves’ iteration of Gotham looks like in the new trailer.

“The Batman” is a reboot of the iconic DC property that puts Pattinson in the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Reeves – who also wrote the screenplay – previously revealed that the film takes place in Year 2 of Wayne deciding to become Batman, so we won’t have to sit through another origin story. But this Batman is still a bit green.

The crux of the story finds Batman using his detective skills to solve a mystery, with Paul Dano’s The Riddler poised to be the Big Bad. Along the way, he crosses paths with Zoe Kravtiz’s Catwoman and Colin Farrell’s Penguin, although Farrell has gone on record as saying he’s only in a few scenes of the film.

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale wrapped up their Dark Knight trilogy with 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” after which Zack Snyder rebooted the Batman character with Ben Affleck in his “Man of Steel” sequel “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Affleck reprised his role in “Justice League,” but after flirting with potentially directing and starring in a standalone of his own, decided to bow out of the role, paving the way for Reeves and Pattinson’s reboot.

“The Batman” is due to hit theaters on March 4, 2022. The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone.
