‘Birdman’ Leads Satellite Awards Nominations

International Press Academy’s nominations find room for virtually all of the year’s awards contenders

“Birdman” led all films in nominations for the Satellite Awards, which were announced on Monday morning by the International Press Academy.

Alejandro G. Inarritu’s black comedy received 10 nominations, including Best Director, acting nods for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone and Best Motion Picture. “The Imitation Game” received eight nominations, while “Gone Girl” and “Boyhood” received seven each and “The Theory of Everything” and “Whiplash” received five.

The typically generous nominations included almost every serious awards contender in most categories, with the 20 film and 14 television categories casting a wide and all-inclusive net.

The 10-film best-picture race includes “Birdman,” “The Imitation Game,” “Gone Girl,” “Boyhood,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Whiplash,” “Mr. Turner,” “Selma,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and the biggest surprise, Ira Sachs’ intimate drama “Love Is Strange.”

Missing from that list: Christopher Nolan‘s “Interstellar,” Clint Eastwood‘s “American Sniper,” Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher” and Angelina Jolie‘s “Unbroken,” which screened too late to be considered by IPA voters.

By not nominating “Unbroken,” the organization avoided the kind of controversy it faced last year, when critics suggested that it had nominated “The Wolf of Wall Street” for five awards despite the fact that its members had not yet been invited to see the movie. (The IPA claimed that a number of its members had gone as guests to a SAG screening.)

The Best Actress category left out Amy Adams for “Big Eyes,” Hilary Swank for “The Homesman,” Shailene Woodley for “The Fault in Our Stars” and Jennifer Aniston for “Cake” in favor of two foreign-language performances, Anne Dorval in “Mommy” and Marion Cotillard in “Two Days, One Night,” as well as Gugu Mbawtha-Raw in “Belle.”

In the television categories, top nominees included “Louie,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Alpha House” on the comedy side, and “House of Cards,” “Hannibal,” “True Detective,” “The Knick” and “The Affair” in drama.

A genre-TV category included “Game of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “Grimm” and “Penny Dreadful.”

The Satellite Awards are given out by the International Press Academy, a group of journalists that was started by a former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president almost 20 years ago.

The Satellite Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15 in Los Angeles.
