MTV kicked off the 2013 EMA awards with a telecast from New York and then Amsterdam on Sunday where Eminem and Austin Mahone topped the winners’ list with two awards each.
Eminem, who teased his surprise performance of new single “Berzerk” on Friday, won the Best Hip Hop and Global Icon awards.
Meanwhile, Austin Mahone debuted his new single “Banga Banga” with a performance in New York City. He took home the inaugural MTV Artist on the Rise award, which was based on social media votes, and Best Push.

Most notably, three-time past winner Katy Perry won her first Best Female award. Miley Cyrus, whose joint-smoking shenanigan made headlines, picked up her very first EMA for Best Video for “Wrecking Ball.” And Justin Bieber won Best Male for the fourth year in a row.
Fans cast a total of 292-million votes for the EMA categories, a record for the awards.
