“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was the leading film and “Game of Thrones” the top television program in nominations announced on Wednesday for the Visual Effects Society’s VES Awards.
“Star Wars” received seven nominations, while “The Revenant” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” received three.
In the animated-feature categories, “The Peanuts Movie” led with five nominations, followed by “Inside Out” and “The Good Dinosaur,” which received three each.
“Game of Thrones” landed nine nominations in the television categories, the most of any work in either medium.
In Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the VES category that most closely corresponds to the Oscars’ Best Visual Effects category, the nominees are “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “San Andreas” and “Furious 7.” The last two of those films did not even make the 10-film shortlist in the Oscar VFX competition.
