Perez is best known for her roles in Spike Lee‘s “Do The Right Thing” and Nicholas Cage romantic comedy “It Could Happen to You.” She recently appeared alongside Penelope Cruz and  Michael Fassbender in “The Counselor.”

The pilot, based on the BBC Three series “Bad Education,” will co-star British actor Jack Whitehall, who reprises his role as Alfie Wickers, a young teacher in San Diego.

Perez will play Wickers’ foil, hard-nosed vice principal Rita Gomez. The two approaches to teaching – Wickers’ unorthodox manner versus Gomez’s Draconian, test-oriented view – promise to clash regularly.

Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory wrote the pilot, based on a story they wrote with Whitehall and Ben Cavey. All four will serve as executive producers for ABC Studios.
