Sony Nabs Buddy Cop Pitch From Writers of Vince Vaughn Comedy ‘The Politician’

Matt Bass and Teddy Bressman previously served as the assistants of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

In a competitive situation, Sony Pictures has acquired an untitled pitch from the writing team of Matt Bass and Teddy Bressman, TheWrap has learned.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is described as a new supernatural twist on the buddy cop comedy.

Sony won a heated bidding war for the pitch on Friday night in a deal that’s worth mid-six-figures. Other bidders were Paramount and CBS Films, according to an individual familiar with the situation.

David Alpert and Julian Rosenberg will produce for Circle of Confusion, whose Matt Smith will executive produce.

Hannah Minghella orchestrated the deal for the studio and will oversee the project with Jonathan Kadin.

Sony previously acquired Bass and Bressman’s raunchy spec script “The Politician,” which has Vince Vaughn attached to star and Michael Dowse (“Goon”) attached to direct. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver are producing that politically incorrect action comedy along with Mark Gordon.

Bass and Bressman used to serve as the assistants of Rogen and Goldberg. Bass, who helped run Rogen’s Alzeimer’s charity, left his job after selling a script to Showtime, while Bressman sold the comedy “Field Trip” to Paramount, Walden Media and Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Picture Co.

CAA reps Bressman and Bass, the latter of whom is also represented by Circle of Confusion and Felker Toczek Suddleson. Bressman is also repped by Jackoway Tyerman.
