‘This Is Us’: First Look at Season 2 Reveals Painful Adoption Secret (Video)

NBC drama’s sneak peek features emotional flashback in a hospital

“This Is Us” fans are getting their first look at Season 2, which promises to involve some tense adoption drama.

The hit NBC series released a scene on Wednesday from the upcoming Sept. 26 premiere, and the footage shows Randall (Sterling K. Brown) telling mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) that his wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), is having trouble getting on board with their plans to adopt a child.

Rebecca claims to Randall that she and late husband Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) knew instantly that they wanted to adopt Randall, but he can tell that his mom isn’t exactly being forthright.

“I know you guys didn’t have a perfect marriage,” Randall says. “You just lost a child, and you both just wanted me — right away, just like that?”

Finally, Rebecca admits that she was resistant to the idea of raising Randall, but that Jack was determined to make it happen.

“I said no, but your father was so sure I was tired and I was grieving, and he just kept pushing me,” she explains. “He was so determined that you were meant to be, meant to be ours.”

“He pushed a stranger on me, and that stranger became my child, and that child became my life — he became you,” Rebecca continues emotionally.

“This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman previously told TheWrap that Jack’s cause of death will be revealed in Season 2, and that the new season will be “very heavy.”

“This Is Us” returns Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
