Comedian 'Not Sorry' for Pearl Harbor Joke on NBC's New Year's Eve Special

Natasha Leggero joked that veterans are so old they can only eat SpaghettiOs

Comedian Natasha Leggero says she isn't sorry for a joke she made about Pearl Harbor veterans during NBC's “New Year's Eve with Carson Daly.”

“I wish I could apologize, but do you really want another insincere apology that you know is just an attempt at damage control and not a real admission of guilt? Let me just try instead to be honest,” Leggero said on her Tumblr Friday. “I’m not sorry. I don’t think the amazing courage of American veterans and specifically those who survived Pearl Harbor is in any way diminished by a comedian making a joke about dentures on television.”

NBC declined to comment Friday.

Leggero, Jane Lynch and Anthony Anderson were joking about a recent tweet by SpaghettiOs that many saw as an attempt to cash in on Pearl Harbor Day: “Take a moment to remember #PearlHarbor with us,” the canned food tweeted.

Quipped Lynch: “I'm offended because they were referring to SpaghettiOs as pasta.”

Added Leggero: “It sucks that the only survivors of Pearl Harbor are being mocked by the only food they can still chew.”

Some viewers expressed their offense on Twitter. Others contacted Leggero with threats. She wrote Friday that she was subjected to “creatively misspelled death threats, rape fantasies, and most of all repeated use of the the C word.”

“In the past few days I have been called a cunt so much I felt like I was in a British pub rooting for the wrong soccer team,” she wrote.

But she added that she didn't see any point in apologizing.

“Do we really believe that the people who fought and defended our freedom against Nazis and the Axis powers will find a joke about SpaghettiOs too much to bear? Sorry, I have more respect for Veterans than to think their honor can be impugned by a glamorous, charming comedian in a fur hat,” she said, describing her New Year's outfit.

“On the one hand you have me, making a joke about how old people can’t chew tough foods very well,” she said. “On the other hand you have Veterans who receive inadequate care upon their return from active duty, rampant sexual assault against female soldiers, staggering rates of suicide, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, substance abuse and depression among soldiers and political gridlock that prevents these problems from getting solved quickly.”

“Where do you think your outrage and action would be better served, calling me a cunt or doing something about the above problems?”

Leggero concluded with a message to vets: “I love you. I truly hope you know that.”

And she had a message for SpaghettiOs: “Let’s do lunch.”

I wouldn't expect anything less from NBC.

  • Joe Key

This politically correct bullshit going on in American media is getting old as hell.

    • Jimmy

I doubt seriously the “American media” had anything to do with this. More likely it was the thin-skinned yahoos who infect the Internet these days.

  • Estelle55

Good for her! Most apologies are only because people whine because their feelings are hurt anyway. I say it is a breath of fresh air when someone says something and does not bow down to the whiners. No doubt, veteran's like a good laugh as well

I've always been lukewarm on Natasha Leggero, but I have to say I love her response. Props.

  • Tyler

Incredible amount of Respect for Leggero! She puts it in the absolutely perfect context. Really no different than 250,000+ people who signed an online petition within a week calling for the return of the elder Robertson to return to A&E yet it would take months n months to get 250k to petition Congress and that piece of drek President to push forth a sincere Jobs Creation bill or legislation to reign in the Fed or Wall St excesses…So good for her!

    • brando

Tyler, maybe you should do your homework before you casually toss out insults. Pres. Obama attempted three separate times in his first term to get a Jobs Bill through Congress, and the Republicans voted it down each time.

  • Ivan

My only problem is with that fake fur hat. Wear real fur or none at all. There's no need to wear an unnatural piece of plastic that we be in a landfill for a million years.

  • InvisibleZombie

It sounded like the joke was more directed at Spaghettios and then cleverly double-backed to make an old age joke but still make the “food” look like the insulters! I think the joke lay in the fact that the product, and not the parent company Canpbells, tweeted the remembrance. Like “Twinkies salutes Rosa Parks!”

  • Jimmy

Good for her. As she so deftly pointed out, there are far more important things to be concerned about regarding veterans.

    • jondbrh

Please excuse the spelking errors. Auto correct is useless.

  • jondbrh

I for one am sick and tired if all the pollitcally incorrect crap put out by bleeding hearts who have nothing better to do with thier time than cause crap to constantly be stirred. Grow the hell up and get on with your life. You dont have to agree with her comment but we still have freedom of speach. I agree with her we need to focus more on taking care of our vets rather than waste time and energy in some I significant s___. By the way Happy New Year .

Maybe my demented elderly mind and few remaining teeth are to blame for my laughing at the joke.

Or maybe my lack of political correct indoctrination is to blame.

Who are the thin-skinned bleating sheep in an uproar about that harmless quip?

Toughen up, people, or you assuredly will become mentally enslaved by your ruling elite masters.

So then, you and your feminist pals don't mind if you're referred to has ‘ho's and btchs, right? That means we have the utmost ‘respect’ for you. LOL!! ‘Funny', isn't it?
