Tom Hiddleston Doesn’t Think He’ll Be Next James Bond: ‘Sorry to Disappoint You’ (Video)

“Avengers” star doubts he’ll replace Daniel Craig, but is “very gratified to hear the enthusiasm”

Tom Hiddleston doesn’t think he’ll be following in Daniel Craig‘s footsteps as the next James Bond.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, everybody. I don’t think that announcement is coming,” he said at the a recent Wizard World Comic Con in Philadelphia, according to ComicBook.com. “I am very gratified to hear the enthusiasm. There’s not much I can say that I haven’t already said — your guess is as good as mine, to be honest.”

There has been speculation that the “Avengers” star is in the running to play 007. Or wishful thinking from Hiddleston’s fans, at least. In March, the actor said that playing the iconic role would be “an extraordinary opportunity.”

“I’m a huge fan of the series,” Hiddleston told the Sunday Times. “We all went to see ‘Spectre’ when we were shooting ‘Skull Island’ in Hawaii. I simply love the theme tune, the tropes and the mythology. I love the whole thing. If it ever came knocking, it would be an extraordinary opportunity.”

The actor added, “And I’m very aware of the physicality of the job. I would not take it lightly.”

Sam Mendes, who has said he will not direct any more Bond movies, stressed that Internet lobbying for a particular actor (or actress) to play the iconic British superspy is a pointless pursuit.

“It’s not a democracy … [executive producer] Barbara Broccoli decides who is going to be the next Bond, end of story,” he said.

In October, most recent 007 Daniel Craig told TimeOut London that, “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists,” rather than do another James Bond movie. However, he later clarified those comments, saying he was open to reprising the role and that at the time of the comments he was just worn out.

While many fans are hoping to see Elba take on the role of the famous spy in the next installments, James Bond author Anthony Horowitz said that the British actor was “too street” to play the iconic role.

Hiddleston will next be seen in “Kong: Skull Island” opposite Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman. He’ll also reprise his role as Loki in Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok.”
