But at one point Swift climbed atop a giant, lit sign that read “1989,” which is both the name of her new album and the 25-year-old’s birth year, and looked down the ledge from the stage as she joked: “I don’t care if it’s VMAs, I’m not jumping off. People are getting bit by snakes it’s dangerous.”

The reference was to an accident that occurred during the Friday rehearsal of Nicki Minaj‘s “Anaconda,” when one of her back-up dancers was rushed to the hospital after being bitten by a real life snake.
