“Sinners” topped all nominees for the 57th NAACP Image Awards, with 18 nominations, including Outstanding Motion Picture and Director, plus Outstanding Ensemble Cast and six for acting — two of which belong to breakthrough performer Miles Caton. Ryan Coogler’s film is now the NAACP record holder for the most nominated movie, besting 2023’s “The Color Purple,” which had 13 nods.
Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” another Outstanding Motion Picture contender, was the runner-up with nine nominations.
Teyana Taylor and Kendrick Lamar lead the pack for individual nominees with six nods each. Both are nominated for Entertainer of the Year alongside Cynthia Erivo, Doechii and Michael B. Jordan.
“The NAACP Image Awards is our declaration to our community that ‘We See You,’ affirming Black creativity, excellence, and humanity across every space where our stories are told,” Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP, said in a statement. “From film, television, and music to literature and beyond, the voices of all of our nominees tell stories that honor our past, celebrate our identity, and remind us that storytelling has the power to move culture forward.”
With seven nominations, Peacock’s “Bel-Air” leads all TV nominees, picking up nods for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Jabari Banks) and more. “Abbott Elementary,” “Reasonable Doubt” and “Ruth & Boaz” all tied for a close second with six nominations each.
Nominations for Taylor were spread across film, TV and music divisions. The musician/actor got Supporting Actress nods for both Tyler Perry’s “Straw” (a limited series on Netflix) and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.” For her album “Escape Room,” Taylor got additional nominations for Outstanding Female Artist and Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album, as well as Outstanding Song – Soul/R&B for “Bed of Roses.”
Lamar, meanwhile, was represented in Outstanding Male Artist, Outstanding Short Form Series or Special – Reality/Nonfiction/Documentary (“The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show starring Kendrick Lamar”) and Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album (“luther” – Kendrick Lamar & SZA), among other categories.
The Image Awards introduced two new categories this year: Outstanding
Editing in a Motion Picture or Television Series, Movie, or Special, whose nominees include Michael P. Shawver (“Sinners”) and Shaheed Qaasim (“Poker Face”) and Outstanding Literary Work — Journalism, which celebrates “excellence in nationally distributed journalism that informs, uplifts, and authentically reflects on experiences, issues, or perspectives significantly affecting the Black community, or U.S. national affairs through a lens of racial equity, social justice, or community impact.” Work by Maya King from the New York Times and CNN’s Lisa Respers France were among the nominees.
